Step by Step Instructions to Refacing

Hanging Doors and Drawer Fronts

  • Place hinges about 2" from top and bottom of doors.  Then secure hinges on door to the frame.  If re-using old hinges, place hinges so screws make new holes.
  • If using hidden hinges,  place the hinge in the 35mm hole on the back of the door.  Attach the frame plate to the bottom hinge only.  Attach the other plate (the one for the top hinge) to the stile the door will hang on, then hang the door on this plate.  You may now attach the bottom hinge plate to the stile also.  Make sure you position each plate to the same place on every stile so the doors will all hang evenly. • On openings with two doors, leave a gap of about 1/8" between doors.  (Important:  When ordering two doors for one opening make sure to measure from the center of the opening to the outside edge and add 3/8" (not 1/2") to the measurement instead of  the full inch you would add for a door's width on a single door opening.  For example:  A door opening of  20 inches with two doors would mean you need two doors 10 3/8 inches wide.  This gives you room to adjust the gap between the two doors.  You would still add 1 full inch to the opening height to provide the door height.)

Preparing Old Drawer Boxes to Accept New Drawer Fronts

  • When replacing the drawer fronts, you must first determine whether your drawer boxes are three-sided or four-sided.
  • If the drawer front makes the forward wall of the drawer box, then you have a three-sided drawer box (21).
  • If the drawer front is mounted to a separate piece that makes up the forward wall of the drawer box, you have a four-sided drawer box (23).
  • Remove  drawer slides from the old drawer box.

Three-Sided Drawer Box

  • Using a saw, trim the drawer front so that no edges extend beyond the top, bottom or sides of the drawer box (22).  This allows the old drawer front to fit inside the drawer opening.
  • Hide rough edges by turning the box around.  The old drawer front should now be in the back of the drawer box.
  • Replace drawer slides, making sure they are centered and flush with the front edge of the box.
  • Center the drawer front on the box and temporarily secure with screws (26).
  • Slide the drawer box into the opening and check alignment.  Adjust as necessary,  then tighten and add screws.

Four-Sided Drawer Box

  • Remove the old drawer front, being careful not to damage the drawer box.
  • Re-attach drawer slides.
  • Center the drawer front on the box and temporarily secure with screws (26).
  • Slide the drawer box into the opening to check the alignment.  Adjust as necessary, then tighten and add screws.
